By TERESA SMITH, Times-Union Staff Writer-

People wanting to help southern neighbors recover from Hurricane Katrina's destruction can send money to either the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross.

"Financial assistance is the greatest single gift people can give," said local Red Cross Chapter Executive Director Larry Peppel. "There will be many needs and as it becomes safe, Red Cross volunteers will go forward into the area."

Physical items - food, personal hygiene products and the like - are not necessary.

"There is no place to store things," said Ken Locke, Salvation Army community services director.

People who wish to volunteer may apply at the Army office, 501 Arthur St., Warsaw.

Checks should be made out to the Salvation Army Disaster Relief, P.O. Box 175, Warsaw, IN 46581. In the memo space write "disaster relief" or "Katrina."

Donations to the American Red Cross can either be made electronically at: www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp or checks can be made out to American Red Cross, National Relief Fund. The local chapter will accept the checks at 320 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw, and forward them to the national organization.

Peppel and Locke said every dollar for relief will go toward that effort.

For more information, call Locke at 574-267-5361, Ext. 22, or the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross at 574-267-5244. [[In-content Ad]]
