This year, an 1880 Silver Dollar Coin, worth approximately $29, was found in a red kettle Dec. 15 at Big R, Warsaw.
The coin was discovered by Bryte Cleveland, Salvation Army secretary, and Oralia Minerath, Salvation Army receptionist.
While they were counting the money at the Salvation Army on the night of Dec. 15, they informed Esteban Pommier, Salvation Army cadet, about the donation.
“December is the Salvation Army’s biggest fundraising time of the year and biggest Christmas giveaway time and we couldn’t do this without the help of the community,” Pommier said.
He said the Salvation Army appreciates those who have given financially, as well as those who have served as bell ringers and volunteers.
Pommier said bell-ringing fund collection efforts for the Salvation Army continue until Saturday.
The Salvation Army’s goal is to raise $80,000 this year, and as of Wednesday, there has been $53,401.52 raised through red kettle efforts.
“This week is our biggest collection week, and if we do the same this week as we did last week we will have $70,000, but be down by $10,000 of our $80,000 goal,” Pommier said.
Pommier said the Salvation Army asks the community to be generous since donations have been down. They also thank those who already have donated.
Pommier said he thought giving may be down because of the poor economy and unemployment.
Donations will go toward the Salvation Army’s programs that provides rental and food assistance, and youth programming for those in need in Kosciusko County.
Pommier said 450 families per month are served by the Salvation Army’s food and rental assistance programs.
Warsaw Rotary’s Salvation Army Day is Friday at noon at the Shrine Building when the organization’s members will donate to the red kettle efforts.
Besides red kettle efforts, the Salvation Army’s Angel tree program served 850 children with gifts. There were 720 Christmas gifts distributed in retirement homes also by the Salvation Army.[[In-content Ad]]
