It is almost that time of year again when efforts will begin to help those less fortunate in the community.

Salvation Army will place its counter top red kettles at 104 locations in Kosciusko County, representing 131 kettles beginning Monday and they will be at the locations until Dec. 24.

There was $7,500 raised during last year's counter top red kettle efforts, and the goal is to raise $10,000 this year, according to Dale Brandenburg, Salvation Army captain.

Funds collected for kettle efforts go to Salvation Army's programs.

"The kettle efforts are our main fundraiser for the year, and decides whether we survive or not, and our whole year depends on the six weeks in November and December when funds are collected," Brandenburg said.

The Salvation Army is currently seeking bell ringers to ring at businesses in Kosciusko County.

During last year's bell ringing efforts, $80,000 was raised, and this year's bell ringing goal is $100,000.

Brandenburg said in 2009, Salvation Army saw an average of 160 families in its social services office per month. This year, they are averaging 330 families per month.

Brandenburg said the Salvation Army is serving more families because unemployment is running out.

Bell ringing efforts will be Nov. 20 to Dec. 24 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

People can call Salvation Army at 574-267-5361 Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to sign up to be a bell ringer volunteer.

There will be eight bell ringing locations this year including the two doors at Walmart, Kmart, Marsh, the two Owen's, JC Penney, Big R, and Lances New Market supermarkets in Syracuse and North Webster.

Salvation Army will begin accepting Angel Tree applications Nov. 1-24 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Salvation Army office.

The program is income-based and distribution of toys, food and clothing will be on Dec. 16.

Those who qualify for the program include newborn to age 12.

There will be trees set up at 10 locations Nov. 1-Dec. 14 in the community where there will be tags that have the sex, age and shoe and clothing sizes and suggested toy items.

Locations where the trees will be include K-Mart, DePuy, Biomet, First United Methodist Church, Medtronic, Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, North Webster Church of God, Warsaw Kiwanis Club, Winona Lake Free Methodist Church and Kosciusko REMC.

This year, JC Penneys nationwide will offer an online Angel Tree donation option.

People can go to jcpenney.com and put in their zip code and purchase an item, and JCPenneys will ship the item for angel tree to Salvation Army.

This year at JC Penneys for the first time people will be able to make a credit card donation by going to the service desk and use a Salvation Army credit card machine for financial donations to Salvation Army.
