By Staff Report-

Sacred Heart School, Warsaw, recently announced the appointment of Mary Ann Irwin as its new principal beginning with the 2007-2008 school year.

Irwin retired as school superintendent for Mt. Pleasant Township Community Schools, Yorktown, on June 30.

"This may have been the shortest 'retirement' in history," said Irwin, as she began her duties as Sacred Heart administrator on July1.[[In-content Ad]]Coming from a district of 2,300 students and a significant number of staff, Irwin is looking forward to being back in a smaller educational community.

"The most enjoyable administrative positions I have had," she said, "have been with single section buildings."

Previously, Irwin was a principal at St. Ambrose School in Anderson, Matthews Elementary in Eastbrook (Marion), Miami Elementary in Wabash, and as curriculum director and principal at Burket for Tippecanoe Valley Schools.

"Single-section elementary buildings are great! As principal, I am able to know each student, their family, and with the teachers and staff, we become a family," she said.

She has had a variety of experiences, including teaching preschool through adult and workplace literacy, held every position as teacher, principal, Title I program coordinator, curriculum director, assistant superintendent and superintendent. Irwin hopes to challenge students with some conversational foreign language experiences, wellness initiatives and community service. She wants to focus on good partnerships with Warsaw and surrounding school districts, as the student base at Sacred Heart feeds into various districts for middle and high school programs.

Irwin is returning to her Warsaw home following an absence of five years while she served in positions at North Newton and Yorktown. Her husband, Jim, retired from 37 years as a teacher and coach. They have four children, all of whom are teachers, and all are married to teachers. She has 13 grandchildren.
