SYRACUSE – Ruth M. “Maxine” Hughes, 91, Syracuse, passed away at 2:45 a.m. Jan. 14, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
She was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Plymouth, to J. D. and Bessie M. Crist Leiter. On Jan. 12, 1942, in LaPorte, she married Guy W. Warner, who preceded her in death. Then on Nov. 28, 1971, in Syracuse, she married Harold H. “Jesse” Hughes, who died June 18, 2007.
She attended Mentone Public Schools and moved to Syracuse in 1942 from Warsaw. She formerly worked for Syracuse Rubber Company for 16 years and also was a self-employed cleaning lady for many years. She enjoyed working in her yard and gardening.
Surviving are her daughter, Laura L. Warner, Syracuse; three sons: Larry D. Warner, Mesquite, N.M.; James R. Warner, California; and Richard A. (and spouse Pam) Warner, Middleburg, Fla.; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Forbes, Wabash, and Norma Moyer, Akron; two brothers, Richard Leiter, Warsaw, and David (and spouse Jackie) Leiter, Mentone. She was preceded by her parents, both husbands and a brother, Robert Leiter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, with Pastor Brad Cox of the Wawasee Lakeside Chapel officiating. Burial is in Union Cemetery, Syracuse.
Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
