MARION - Ruth Emmaline Boller Grant, 91, passed away Jan. 31, 2011, in Warsaw.

She was the second of three daughters born to James Lee and Alma Thornburg Boller. She was born Nov. 10, 1919, at the family farm in Van Buren. In March 1944, she married Merlyn Arthur Grant. They were married for 64 years. He died in August 2008.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed reminiscing about growing up on the farm as she told of the simplicity and joy of that life, and the strong family bonds that were forged there.

Following her graduation from Taylor University, Upland, she worked for both the Grant County Department of Welfare and the Marion County Department of Welfare. While at Taylor University, she met Merlyn. During the early years of their marriage, they spent time living in Indianapolis, Chicago, Boston and South Bend, where she worked as a social worker.

Following the completion of her husband's medical training, they resided in Fairmount and then in Marion, where they raised their family and lived until 2007. She then moved to Warsaw, and lived with her daughter and son-in-law after her husband was placed in a nursing home there.

She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, in Marion for more than 50 years, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a "soldier" in the Salvation Army for many years, and she was an active member of the Marion General Hospital Women's Auxiliary. In Warsaw, she attended First Baptist Church with her daughter and son-in-law where she enjoyed the spiritual messages, and the fellowship of its members.

She was an avid reader and could converse on a seemingly endless array of subjects. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and travel. She and her husband had the opportunity to visit Europe, Asia and many other destinations throughout the United States and Canada with their family. During their years in Marion, the Grants lived in Wildwood, where she particularly enjoyed the peace and serenity of the woods, the ponds and all of the wildlife the property had to offer.

Surviving are her loving children, Martha (and spouse Henry) Hart, Warsaw, and Douglas (and spouse Barbara) Grant of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Grant; four step-granddaughters; eight step-great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Helen and Edith.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, with Pastors Henry Hart, Charles Hall and Steve Peters officiating.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.[[In-content Ad]]
