KRA is a non-profit that has been in business for about five years. Since 2011 they have timed 150 events ranging from running and swimming to cycling.
They have timed events in three states, with about 85 percent of events in Kosciusko County.
“KRA never dreamed they would be this large and the demand is even larger,” said Bill Crane, KRA executive director, in a release from the organization.
Close to three quarters of a million dollars has been raised by charities in the area, the release states.
“One of the main points of our mission statement is for charities to raise much-needed funding,” Crane said.
Crane said the last part of the organization’s mission statement, to provide a platform for men and women, boys and girls to have healthier lifestyles, has been successful.
Being a not-for-profit has been a challenge because of the cost of the equipment, especially the timing equipment, according to Crane. KRA now has three sets and can time three different events on the same Saturday morning.
There have been events in Winona Lake, Nappanee and Fort Wayne at one time. K-21 Health Foundation and Resia Rinker, Lakeside Fitness, Syracuse, have provided most of the funding for the equipment.
By January the group usually has 10 to 12 events planned. This year, they have 32 events planned.
There are two types of volunteers needed. One would take care of setup and take down, and the other would run the computer. The computer work is where KRA needs the help most. Once the processes are learned, they only need to handle four to six Saturday mornings per year.
Anyone interested in learning about how to become a volunteer can contact Crane at 574-268-1007.
