The park is a leash-free dog park located on the corner of East CR 300N and North CR 100E in Warsaw.
Dogtoberfest 2013, the live auction and raffle, is Oct. 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Downtown Eatery and Spirits, 205 W. Center St.
This is the third year for Dogtoberfest, according to Carla Carlton, Lake City Animal Clinic owner.
Carlton came up with the idea for the fundraiser to raise money for the dog park that she founded in 2011.
“Dogs need a safe place to play because not everyone is blessed with a place for their dogs to run,” Carlton said.
The dog park does not receive funding from the city or county, and membership fees support the park. The membership fee is $40 for the first dog and $20 for each additional dog, up to three dogs.
She said the dog park gets dog lovers together and people who might not otherwise meet each other have the opportunity to interact with other dog lovers.
Auction items are valued at $150 and up for Dogtoberfest and include golf outings, gift baskets from local merchants and more.
Prizes include a choice of gift certificates for a week of dining out at five area restaurants, a $200 gas gift card and more.
When participants purchase the ticket at the event they also will receive a long-stemmed rose.
The regular raffle has prizes of car washes, food gift cards, clothing gift cards and more. Miller Light beer will be on special and The Downtown will have food specials as well.
Another event is Dash for the Dogs on Oct. 19 at 9 a.m.
This is the first annual 5k run and walk and dogs may participate as well. The race starts and ends at Rudy’s Dog Park.
The first 100 people to register for the event will receive T-shirts and the first 50 dogs to participate will receive bandanas.
“This is a way to get people out and exercising with their dogs,” Carlton said.
Preregistration is $15, and $20 on the day of the event. There is a free 1-mile fun walk.
Interested runners and walkers may go to rudysdogpark.org to register online or print a form, or may pick up registration forms at many area merchants including Warsaw Cut Glass, Paws and Claws, The Lake House and Lake City Animal Clinic.
This is a chip timed event. Trophies will go to the top male and female runners and the top dog. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place in each of the age categories.
An art project fundraiser for Rudy’s Dog Park was planned by Kallie Kirkendall, Lakeview Middle School art teacher, and local special needs students.
Rudy’s Dog Park wanted a new T-shirt design and Kirkendall provided the students with pictures of dogs to make paintings of.
The dog park provided canvases for each student and once the pictures were completed, the park’s staff will choose nine of them to be printed on the back of each new T-shirt.
Plans are for the student’s paintings to be auctioned off at Dogtoberfest and the artists will receive 75 percent of the proceeds from the pictures.
Carlton and Kirkendall worked together to think of a way to get students at Lakeview Middle School involved in a community project for Rudy's Dog Park.
“Dr. Carlton asked if some of my students would like to create paintings of dogs for a fundraiser. The paintings would then be used to create a logo design for the back of Rudy's Dog Park T-shirts,” Kirkendall said.
Kirkendall worked with co-workers Nikki Wood and Julie Berry to get students at Lakeview Middle School involved. Wood and Kirkendall planned a day after school for students to paint.
“We listened to music, looked at funny dog photos, and let our artistic abilities take over. Julie and I have been painting with students in class that could not come to the after school painting party,” Kirkendall said. “The works of art we have so far are beautiful. Some of the paintings are of Dr. Carlton's four legged furry patients and some of the photos are of our own pooches. We have had a blast creating our masterpieces.”
