She was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Warsaw, to Marion and Emmy McCandlish Reiff. On Feb. 1, 1941, she married Henry J. "Hank" Whelan, who survives.
Moving to Nappanee from North Webster in 1963, she graduated from North Webster High School. She retired from Pacific Molasses Co. after 10 years as secretary. She volunteered for many years with her husband at Nappanee Open Door. She was a faithful member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Bremen. She enjoyed golf and was very proud of her hole-in-one at McCormick Creek Golf Course. She loved playing cards and cooking. Family was very important to her and was a devoted mom and grandma. She was always sharing and serving those in time of need.
Also surviving are a son, Larry (and spouse Helen) Whelan, Nappanee; two daughters, Judy (and spouse Melvin) Myers, Nappanee, and Mary Ann (and spouse Dennis) Taylor, Wakarusa; seven grandchildren: Karla (and spouse Bob) Stouder; Randy (and spouse Nora) Menzie; Rick (and spouse Karen) Menzie; Robert Menzie; Rita (and spouse Larry) Seitz; Pam (and spouse Tony) Peffley; and Diane (and spouse Brian) Thomason; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Staley, and two brothers, Morris and Gene Reiff.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Bremen, with Father Ferdinand Polycarp officiating, assisted by Father Terry Fisher. Prayers and eulogy will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, by the Rev. Janet McFall-Brown. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with a rosary service at 8 p.m.
