SOUTH WHITLEY - Roy L. Christner, 97, of South Whitley, died at 7:20 p.m. Dec. 14, 2009, at Parkview Whitley Hospital, where he was admitted Dec. 8.

He was born May 31, 1912, in Wabash County, to Elmer S. and Elva Myers Christner. On Sept. 1, 1933, he married Esther A Dowty, who died Sept. 12, 1995.

He began his work career with Gripnut in 1939. Later it became Gripco. He was inducted in the U.S. Navy on May 8, 1943, and because a diesel mechanic and served on USS Charles Kimmel. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 2, 1945. Returning to the area, he returned to Gripco, South Whitley, where he became a foreman. He retired with 39 years of service. He was a charter member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2919, South Whitley; American Legion Post 98, Columbia City; and Huntington Eagles Lodge.

Surviving are a son, Eddie S. (and spouse Sharon) Christner, Warsaw; a daughter, Karen Christner Ortiz, Evansville; four grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Martin, North Manchester; and a brother, Raymond "Mack" Christner, Fort Myers Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at South Whitley Cemetery, with Pastor Peter Greenhow officiating.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
