Roundabout

Just after the new year I decided to take my life into my own hands and drive through the new roundabout. I braced myself as I entered it. I was ready to get all confused and drive in circles for hours. That was OK ... I had rented a small car and it was full of gas.

I was very nervous just like the time I bought a 69 Mustang with a three-speed transmission. At that time I was a new 16-year-old driver that did not know how to drive a stick. As I entered I kept saying to myself. relax it’s the opposite of what they taught us in driver’s education. So remember yield to the car on the left that’s already in the roundabout. They told us if two people came to an intersection at the same time the guy on the right gets to go first. If four cars get there at the same time you get out beat up the other drivers and take their wallets and leave. That sounds silly, just about as silly as people that claim they can’t figure out the new roundabout.

Well, I survived and did not go round and round for hours. Quite frankly, I was very impressed, it was smooth. So I parked in the small lot just west of the roundabout. I walked my dog for 30 minutes or so around the pond or spillway they created with trees and grass. I watched the whole time waiting for a horrible crash caused by this confusing mess they had made of a dangerous intersection that has claimed many fenders and a few lives if not more. There were no wrecks and I never saw anyone confused, much to my surprise people made it through without a scratch.

My point is they did a great job and it works. Whoever is responsible should be congratulated for a perfect solution to a scary intersection. I can’t wait for the other one to solve another bottle neck and scary place to pull out onto Old 30 West. If you think that the roundabouts are too much to deal with, hang up your license and call a cab. I think the same people that complain about this also say competition is bad for our area and we should have only two food stores to choose from.

The fact is Warsaw is growing and we need things like we are seeing, and you either grow with Warsaw or you spend your valuable time complaining and dragging your feet. I want to add positive energy to my hometown not just tear her down, just because it was not my idea in the first place.
