Roland L. Sprong, 85, of Middlebury, died at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 12, 2012, in Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Huntington County,  to John W. and Amanda Fahl Sprong. On Jan. 5, 1990, in Elkhart, he married Marjorie Mae Stahl, who survives.

He was a 1945 graduate of Warsaw High School and served his country in World War II with the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Formerly of Warsaw, he moved to Middlebury in 1990. He is a retired machinist, formerly working at Sun Metal, Warsaw, and was also a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Middlebury, and Grace Baptist Church, Belleview, Fla.; a life member of American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, both in Warsaw; and 50-year member of Warsaw Masonic Lodge and Elkhart York Rite.

Also surviving are a daughter, Joan Parker (and companion David Sloan), Warsaw; a sister, Martha Ann Molebash, Elkhart; brothers Ralph and John Raymond Sprong, both of Warsaw; a stepson; a stepdaughter; two grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
