Robertson Named Principal of Jefferson Elementary

One of Warsaw Community School’s own graduates now is leading Jefferson Elementary School.

Tuesday afternoon, the Warsaw School Board unanimously approved David Robertson as the principal at Jefferson. Robertson is a 1999 Warsaw Community High School graduate.

Warsaw Schools started the 2012-13 school year Monday.

Robertson replaces Dennis Duncan, who served the past 19 years as Jefferson’s principal and worked for WCS for 32 years.

Duncan retired earlier this month to become the director of prison education for Grace College. Grace recently was selected by Indiana’s Department of Correction to head the state’s Adult Basic Education program in the northern region.

Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz made the recommendation to the school board to approve Robertson as Jefferson’s new top administrator. Hintz said he was very impressed with the caliber of Robertson, and recommended Robertson’s contract be for 215 days. Robertson’s salary will be $81,120 plus benefits.

Asked if Robertson’s salary would be the same as Duncan’s, Hintz said it would not. It would be comparable to WCS principals who have the same years of experience as Robertson.

During his comments to the board, Robertson said it was a privilege and honor to be back with WCS. Working in Goshen the past two years as a principal was great, but Robertson said it really created an appreciation for him the way stuff is done at Warsaw.

Duncan left big shoes to fill, Robertson said, but he just wants to carry on with the great work Duncan did.

The first two days of school at Jefferson, Robertson said, have been great. With the people, system and procedures in place there, it all has been running smoothly, he said.

After the meeting, Robertson further explained why he wanted to return to WCS.

“The opportunity to live in a community and serve in a community and really invest in a community is something I was really interested in,” he said.

He and his family live in the Jefferson Elementary area.

Robertson said it also was just an opportunity to work for a caliber school district that is Warsaw.

One of his biggest goals for his first year at Jefferson will be to build relationships with all the key stakeholders at Jefferson, including teachers, staff, parents and students. He wants to get to know all the people and build relationships with them.

“I love kids,” Robertson said. “The bottom line for me as an administrator is to do what’s best for kids and I’m really passionate about that.”

Besides being a 1999 WCHS graduate, Robertson is a 2003 graduate of Grace College, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He received his master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Ball State University in 2009.

For two years starting in fall 2003, he and his wife, Meredith, taught at Perry Township in Indianapolis. Robertson then taught four years at Harrison Elementary School in Warsaw before becoming assistant principal for a year under then-principal Randy Polston.

They then moved to Goshen for two years.
