NORTH MANCHESTER - Robert W. Beery, 95, North Manchester, died at 2:50 p.m. Oct. 7, 2008, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Jan. 21, 1913, in Fairfield County, Ohio, to Percy and Grace Bagwell Beery. On Sept. 3, 1938, he married Irene L. Hoover who died June 17, 1999.

At age 12, his family moved from Fairfield County, Ohio, to North Manchester. He graduated from Chester High School in 1931 and from Manchester College in 1936. He was a member of the Manchester College Board of Trustees for 43 years and had served as chairman of the board.

He taught English and Latin and coached basketball and baseball at Clay Township High School, Howard County, for two years. He was an office manager for Clay Syler at the Big Four Elevator, North Manchester, for four years. He then began farming and retired in 1978. He was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren, North Manchester.

He was active in and was the first lay moderator for the South-Central district of the Church of the Brethren. He served on the board of directors of Fairview Cemetery and for many years was secretary. He also volunteered with Church World Service in New Windsor.

Surviving are three sons, Leland H. (and spouse Angilee) Beery and Stanley K. (and spouse Christine) Beery, both of North Manchester, and David L. (and spouse Barbara Jenkins) Beery, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; a daughter, Jeannine (and spouse Larry) Samuelson, Angola; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at Manchester Church of the Brethren, North Manchester, with Pastor Karen Eberly officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia.

Calling is from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 at DeLaughter-Mckee Mortuary, North Manchester, and two hours prior to the service.
