SYRACUSE - Robert L. "Smokey" Haines, 86, North Webster, died at 4:40 a.m. May 13, 2008, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Clunette, to Art and Ida Detterman Haines. On Aug. 17, 1945, he married Betty Baugher, who survives.

He was a lifetime area resident. He retired in October 1983 from DePuy, Warsaw, where he worked in purchasing, marketing and international sales for 38 years. He also was employed at Ace Hardware, North Webster, for 17 years, and enjoyed Lance's Breakfast Club. He was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the North Webster American Legion Post 253 and he was a World War II veteran in the Signal Corp.

Also surviving are a son, Steven (and spouse Patti) Haines, Warsaw; two daughters, Cynthia (and spouse Chad) Beezley, Wilmot, and Mary Sue (and spouse Andy) Hartley, North Webster; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; a brother, Paul Haines, Goshen; and a sister, Helen Wagoner, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at North Webster United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Mann officiating. Military graveside services by members of the North Webster American Legion Post 253 will be at North Webster Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse.
