Robert L. Shanafelt, 63, of 703 W. Van Buren St., Nappanee, died at 7 a.m. April 12, 2007, in his residence after an extended illness.

He was born May 27, 1943, in South Bend, to Elmer L. and Ernestine Stegmann Shanafelt. On Dec. 21, 1984, in South Bend, he married Sue Reed, who survives.

He grew up in South Bend and lived in Nappanee for 23 years. A 1962 John Adams High School graduate, he worked at Quonset, Mishawaka, for 27 years, retiring in 2005. He was a member of and an assisting minister at St. John's Lutheran Church, Nappanee.

Also surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Randy (Jennifer) Anglemyer and Stephanie Chapman, both of Nappanee, and Mrs. Lin (Heidi) Shafer, Mishawaka; two sons, Robert Shanafelt II, Huntsville, Ala., and Todd Shanafelt, Goodyear, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mrs. Raymond (Barbara) Cole, Tyner; C. Sue Shanafelt, Mishawaka; Mrs. Laverne (Trudie) Hovarter, LaPaz; and Mrs. Douglas (Paula) Johns, Newport, Wash.; and a brother, Randall Shanafelt, South Bend.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with Pastor David Stephey officiating, assisted by Pastor Tom Herbron.

Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services Sunday at the funeral home.
