He was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Fort Wayne, to Wilbur H. “Nick” and Helen Guild Showalter. He was married to his loving Marietta Showalter for 60 years, and she survives.
He graduated in 1947 from Marion High School; in 1952 from Ball State University, Muncie, with his bachelor’s degree and in 1955 with his master’s degree. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War.
He retired in 1998 as professor emeritus from Purdue University in West Lafayette, after 33 years in the Audiology and Speech Science Department, where he was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. He formerly worked for eight years at Peru Community School Corp. in Indiana. He retired to Tippecanoe Lake in 1998 from West Lafayette. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in North Webster, and Morrison United Methodist Church in Leesburg, Fla.
Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Marie Thurgood, Centennial, Colo., and Julia Ellen (and spouse Larry) Ott, Lafayette; two sons, Daniel Guild (and spouse Kimberly) Showalter, Columbus, and Robert “Andy” Showalter, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Helen (and the late Claude) Hewitt, Marion, and Margaret (and the late William) Keith, Tallahassee, Fla. and a brother, Richard (and spouse “Bunny”) Showalter, Grand Ledge, Mich.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Webster United Methodist Church, 7822 E. Epworth Forest Road, North Webster, with Senior Pastor David Smitley of the church officiating.
