NORTH MANCHESTER - Robert F. Block, 88, of Liberty Mills, died at 10 p.m. Feb. 6, 2011, in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born June 22, 1922, in Michigan City, to Leo and Mary Spencer Block. On Dec. 14, 1941, he married Virginia Miller, who survives.

He worked at Gripco Manufacturing for 41 years, retiring in 1986. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1942-45 in the European Theatre. He was a member of Liberty Mills United Methodist Church, South Whitley Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 286, North Manchester. He graduated from Elston High School, Michigan City.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald (and spouse Kathy) Block, North Manchester, and John (and spouse Julie) Block, Andrews; a son, Mary Lou (and spouse Gary) Sroufe, South Whitley; two sisters, June Smith, Michigan City, and Darlene Peterson, Salem, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor Greg Bradford officiating. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery with military rites by members of Huntington VFW Post 2689.

Calling is from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
