He was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Warsaw, to Artie and Florence Linn Rhoades. On Nov. 9, 1951, in Leesburg, he married Barbara Wallace, who survives.
He was a longtime Warsaw resident, except for 10 years in Sarasota, Fla. He enjoyed woodworking and building crafts, being outdoors, fishing and hunting, and collecting old buttons and making button boards. He enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre, along with reading old westerns. Many will remember him as a regular at Breading’s Cigar Store, as well as one of the famous Dominos champions at Breading’s. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He worked at Big Boy Products for 10 years, and drove a school bus for Warsaw Community Schools. He also worked at Schrader’s Automotive for 19 years. He served his country in the Indiana National Guard, retiring as a captain. He was a member of the American Legion Post #49, Warsaw, and the Elks Lodge of Warsaw.
Also surviving are a son, Todd Rhoades, Winona Lake; a daughter, Teresa Rhoades, Warsaw; two granddaughters, Jenna (and spouse Eric) DeFord, Warsaw, and Sara Spear, Warsaw; two great-grandchildren, Braxton and Zach DeFord, Warsaw; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Dunwell, and two brothers, Jack and Bill Rhoades.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery, Legion Circle, with Chaplain Bob Jarboe officiating, and military honors by members of American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126, Warsaw.
McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
