WINONA LAKE -ÊA Warsaw man is in custody after allegedly breaking into a home Wednesday around 7:53 p.m.
Jon Phillip Lackey, 36, of 77 Kings Highway, Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Wednesday at 8:43 p.m. on charges of burglary to a residence, burglary to a business, resisting/fleeing law enforcement and two counts of public intoxication. He is being held on $5,000 bond.
According to a report from the Winona Lake Police Department, an officer was called to a residence on Chestnut Avenue regarding a break-in.
A resident of the home, Elizabeth Mundinger, said she was upstairs when she heard someone walking downstairs. After calling and going downstairs, Mundinger noticed the front door of the residence was open and saw a man walking through the attached porch of the home. Mundinger yelled at the man, and he took off running toward Sunday Lane.
Mundinger called 911 and then noticed that her mother's purse was on the kitchen table and someone had gone through it. Some contents of the purse were on the floor, and a plant was pushed over in the home.
When officer Ryan Andrew arrived near the scene, he saw a man wearing a hat and no shirt on Sunday Lane near the Chestnut Street residence. When Andrew asked the man to stop, the man took off on foot.
The man ran to the Billy Sunday Museum on Park Avenue, where Office Carl Love also ordered the man to stop. When the man did not stop, Love sprayed the man with pepper spray.
When the man continued toward Love, Officer Chad Stevens caught the man and put him in restraints. The man identified himself as Lackey and then was taken to the Kosciusko County Jail.
Once at the jail, Lackey reportedly said he was playing jokes on people from Grace College and that he only went into one home and was trying to scare people, not hurt them.
Once officers asked Lackey why he allegedly went through the purse, he asked to speak with a lawyer.
When officers were leaving the Mundinger residence, Brent Wilcoxson approached Stevens and said that a man tried to get into his residence earlier but was unsuccessful. Wilcoxson said he saw the man on his porch and tried to find him but was not successful.
The incident remains under investigation. [[In-content Ad]]
