SYRACUSE - After sitting closer to the bottom of the Northern Lakes Conference than the top, making the move back up takes time. It can't be done in one big leap.

Warsaw's path in girls track has been filled with some frustration and success, but it has been a slow trek. But the gap does seem to be closing.

Northridge won the Northern Lakes Conference triangular meet with 72 points. Wawasee had 48 and Warsaw 36 Thursday.

"We have a very young team, but we are closing the gap surely and steadily," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said. "We are looking forward to the (NLC) conference meet Tuesday."

Wawasee has been the class of the conference for a few years and with that, a thorn in Warsaw's side. Although this year's Warrior squad may not be as outstanding as in years past, it marks improvement for the Tigers to come as close as they did.

With Northridge dominating the meet, Warsaw led Wawasee for second place after seven events 19-16. The margin was 27-23 after nine events. But after 11 events, Wawasee regained the lead 34-29 and held off Warsaw at the end.

Summer Boyd led the charge for the Tigers with two exciting wins - in the 800 and 1600. After running in fourth place for three laps, Boyd, and Wawasee's Alisha Henderson, broke away from the pack with Henderson taking a slight lead after half of a lap. But Boyd turned things on over the final 200 meters and won easily.

A few races later, Boyd lined up against Wawasee's Kassie Biddle in the 800. Once again, Boyd stayed back and waited to make her move, which obviously had to come sooner with the shorter race. It did as Boyd took control again in the final 200 meters.

"Summer Boyd has been very competitive with the Wawasee runners the past few years in cross country and track," Ogle said. "For her to win the 800 and 1600, it is kind of a breakthrough meet for her."

Warsaw also got a win from its 400 relay team and a pair of second places from Ashlee Bouse in the 100 and 300 hurdles.

"Ashlee Bouse was sick, but she was second in two hurdles races," Ogle said. "I was very happy with our 4 x 100 relay team (Erin Cook, Kathrine Masur, Nicole Derenzo, Bobbi Wildman)."

It was Wawasee's depth that allowed it to hold off Warsaw.

"It was bad (wet) conditions, but I thought our girls ran well," Wawasee coach Joe Company said. "We only got two first places in the long and high jump, we had a lot of second and third places, and that helped us out a lot.

"I have been telling the girls all year that we don't have the stand outs, but we have enough people that are good enough athletes that we can score a lot of points without having to win all the events," he said. "Tonight was a good example of people stepping up. I don't think we had anyone person score over 10 points, maybe five."

Wawasee is now 8-3 in dual meets and 3-3 in the NLC. Warsaw is 2-8 overall and 2-4 in the NLC. Next up for both teams is the NLC meet Tuesday at Northridge at 5 p.m.

"We just have to keep them positive (for the NLCs)," Company said. "We had a couple of people set P.Rs (personal bests) tonight with Alexis Culver in the 200 and Katie Brown in the long jump. We are set to come around as a team. We know it is time to perform well."
