Richey Tapped For Leesburg Town Council Seat

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

LEESBURG - Larry Richey has lived in Leesburg since 1968 and feels that "this is the time to step up."

Richey will have his chance to step up in his new position as a Leesburg Town Council member.

Thursday night during the caucus in Leesburg, Richey and Ted Carter told those in attendance why they wanted to fill the council position left open by Rick Stookey's resignation in July.

Richey, who is a plant manager at ABC Industries in Winona Lake, lives in Leesburg with his wife, Sue. The couple have a son, Eric Shipp, who has three children, Travis, Brandon and Howie, with his wife, C.J. Richey, owns a home in Leesburg as well as another lot where he and Sue plan to build a retirement home in the future.

Richey attended Leesburg Elementary School, played and coached little league in the town, and was a Cub Scout leader.

In his 30 years in manufacturing he has held several managerial positions, including 11 years as a supervisor and two years as plant manager. He has experience in financial planning, setting budgets, personnel, scheduling, and grounds, building and machine maintenance.

After Richey and Carter addressed those in attendance, Republican Precinct Committeeman Harold Jones then made the final decision about who would be the new council member.

Jones said, "Over the years I've had to go looking for somebody (to fill open council positions). Tonight I have two good candidates. I would like to make the council four members because you are both good candidates."

Jones added that until 4 p.m. Thursday, he still did not know who he was going to choose for the position. Finally, Jones said, he chose Richey because Richey has lived in the town longer, applied first and lives in District 3 in the town.

"I am pleasantly surprised," Richey said. "I've know Ted (Carter) for a while, and he is an extremely bright guy."

Carter is married to current Leesburg Clerk-Treasurer Jan Carter. Jones said he did not have any problem with having a husband and wife on the council at the same time, and added that Ted Carter was a very good candidate.

The next regular meeting for the Leesburg Town Council is Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall.[[In-content Ad]]
