NAPPANEE - Richard Alan Best, 87, of 1003 Elizabeth, Republic, Mo., and formerly of Nappanee, died at 1:15 CST Nov. 16, 2009, in his residence.

He was born Sept. 30, 1922, in Nappanee, to William C. and Idola Weiser Best. On Sept. 24, 1944, in Nappanee, he married Maryellen Neterer, who survives.

Moving to Republic a year ago, he was a Nappanee High School graduate and a World War II Coast Guard veteran. He retired from sales at Inman Retail Food Brokerage Co., Detroit, Mich. He attended First Brethren Church, where he served as moderator, deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Nappanee American Legion and served on the Nappanee City Council for eight years, Nappanee City Judge for four years, the Nappanee Utilities Board and the Elkhart County Park Board for eight years.

Also surviving are a son, Randall (and spouse Karen) Best, Massillon, Ohio; two daughter, Cynthia (and spouse Roger) Heckaman, Syracuse; Cathlin Stuntz, Republic; and Elizabeth (and spouse Phil) Keiser, Sauk City, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, William W. (and spouse Kris) Best, Nappanee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Brethren Church, Nappanee, with the Rev. Tom Schiefer officiating. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery with military graveside services by members of Nappanee American Legion.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Sunday at the church.
