Rex Reed was honored Friday afternoon for his 18 years of service as circuit court judge in Kosciusko County.
The Kosciusko County Bar Association held a luncheon for Reed at Tourmaline, a new event center, that opened Friday at 208 S. Buffalo St. in downtown Warsaw.
There were 50 local lawyers and judges from Kosciusko County as well as Fulton, Whitley and Marshall counties who attended the luncheon.
Reed, 71, retired Dec. 31 after serving as Kosciusko County’s circuit court judge since 1995.
Mike Reed took Rex’s place on Jan. 1.
Rex said he decided to retire to do farming, spend time with his two grandchildren and family and make time for his hobbies of bicycling, running and swimming.
Rex said he will miss working with the attorneys he saw every day as well as his former staff.
He said advances in technology over the years have improved the legal system in Kosciusko County.
Rex graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1959 and attended Purdue University, receiving a civil engineering degree in 1964, and attended Indiana University School of Law, earning his law degree in 1969.
Dana Leon, Kosciusko County Bar Association president, said the association wanted to have the luncheon to honor Rex and welcome Mike.
“Judge Reed has been a part of the legal community in Warsaw for years and we all are interested in marking his retirement and honoring him and the work he has done in the community as a civic leader,” Leon said.
Leon said the purpose of the luncheon was to share memories of Reed’s term in office and let him know he will be missed.
Rex said Mike will bring a fresh perspective and knowledge of technology to the court position.
Mike has been practicing law for the past 30 years.
Mike said he will look into bringing some technological advancements to the court system to possibly have remote access to court hearings.
He also wants to develop a drug rehabilitation program.
Mike earned a bachelor’s in administration degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 and earned a law degree from Vanderbilt Law School in 1981.
He has served as an attorney for the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals and Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission.
He has been a public defender and represented towns including Claypool, Silver Lake, Sidney and Syracuse as a town attorney.
