He was born May 27, 1934, in Lafayette, to Alfred E. and Vera E. Purdy Lewis. On March 29, 1958, he married Margene L. Dykhuizen, who died June 8, 1998. On Jan. 1, 2002, in Lafayette, he married L. Delores “Dee” Stone Grubbs, who survives.
He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1952, Ball State University in 1956 and received a master’s degree in education from Purdue University in 1960. He retired in 1996 from Lafayette School Corp. after 40 years as a middle school math teacher and lived most of his life in Lafayette until he moved to the Barbee Lakes area in 2002. He was a member of North Webster United Methodist Church and a former member of Congress St. United Methodist Church and Lions Club, Lafayette, where he served as trustee for many years. He was a member of Lakeland Kiwanis, North Webster, and Indiana Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the Lions Club, Lafayette.
Also surviving are a son, Jeffrey Lewis, Lafayette; a daughter, Jill (and spouse Chris) Renn, Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Leonard “Lug” (and spouse Erne) Lewis, Lafayette; two stepdaughters, Deborah Harrison, Gilbert, Ariz., and Melissa (and spouse Steve) Metzger, Battle Creek, Mich.; a stepson, Matthew Grubb, Owosso, Mich.; and 11 step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at North Webster United Methodist Church with Pastor David Smitley officiating.
Calling is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
