He was born in Huntingdon, Pa., to the Rev. Dr. Foster and Grace Stayer Statler. On June 4, 1950, he married Ruth Ludwick, who died Jan. 24, 2008.
He graduated from Manchester College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1949. In 1952, he earned a bachelor of divinity from Bethany Theological Seminary. He served as assistant pastor of Walnut Creek Church of the Brethren, North Manchester, and upon graduating from seminary was pastor of the first (now Northview) Church of the Brethren, Indianapolis. He then began a 28-year career in the ecumenical movement. He served as Council of Churches executive in Indiana, Kansas and York County, Pa. He initiated inter-church programs and services, promoted Christian education and worked faithfully toward building Christian unity.
Following retirement in 1986, he lived in West Virginia and continued his Christian service. Upon Ruth’s death, he moved to Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester. He was an active member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren and on the boards of directors of the Shepherd Center, North Manchester, and Seniors for Peace at Timbercrest.
Surviving are a son, Michael Statler, Muncie; two daughters, Suzanne Statler (and spouse Tom List), Porta Costa, Calif., and Amy Statler (and spouse Poul) Bahson, Palm Spring, Calif.; two grandsons; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. April 26 at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester.
Calling is at 1 p.m. April 26 at the chapel and continues after the service.
