In response to Jeff Harding in the May 1st issue:
Dear Jeff, thank you for joining your fellow radical compatriots in assuming that because I'm not like you, I am inferior (there's a word for that, but I can't remember what it is).
Thank you for letting us know that only you can judge someone without knowing them while recklessly accusing others of doing just that. Calling someone a racist is a powerful accusation that must be backed up with strong evidence. Thank you for presenting such evidence with your argument - oh, wait, you didn't.
This kind of thing is what old Washington looks for when they want to drive us apart as a nation and keep us fighting a cultural civil war while distracting us from the grotesque failures of the past eight years. I pose this question to you: What has George W. Bush done for you lately? In the eight years he has been in charge, how have you benefited?
I assume that since you are calling progressive, nationally beneficial ideas a problem that you are one of the lucky wealthiest 1 percent of our population who are living comfortably off the runaway profits of the rising oil prices, and tax breaks for taking the jobs of your multi-billion dollar corporation overseas (not to mention the tax break you get for just for being wealthy in the first place). You also must have a wonderful healthcare plan and don't have to worry about getting sick. You also must not have to choose between sending your kids to daycare and buying them food.
By coming out publicly and saying the ill-informed, hateful and divisive things you have said, you have shown more people that we are ready to take this country in a new direction. These are not the thoughts of most Americans and will not be remembered in 20 years when we think of this crucial turning point in American history, and these shameful thoughts will not be missed when all Americans are living comfortable healthy and wealthy lives together as a united country (you can write another letter in 20 years thanking us for that, I'll wait).
I pray that you realize before it is too late for you to see people who are different as allies and not enemies, as people who can offer you different ideas based on their own experiences, use these things to enrich your life and push no one away who can offer you a new perspective. That's what I have done by giving your arguments careful consideration before responding.
A change in Washington will yield change on our culture. We need a uniter not a divider. Thank you for proving the point of my last letter.
