Four local residents are in Louisiana, assisting people who were evacuated from their homes before Hurricane Gustav hit.

The hurricane made landfall at approximately 10 a.m. Monday near Concodrie, La. Many residents were left without electrical power and were evacuated from their homes over the weekend.[[In-content Ad]]Gene and Beverly Minton, North Webster, left Thursday to prepare shelters for evacuees in Louisiana. Randy Schmucker and Mike House, both of Warsaw, are leaving this morning for Baton Rouge, La., to assist evacuees.

They all are volunteers with the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross who have been trained to assist evacuees.

"It is a natural instinct for me to help. When I help hurricane victims there is a feeling I get that I don't get doing anything else," said Schmucker during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon.

Schmucker, who previously assisted with hurricane relief efforts after Hurricane Rita hit, stressed the importance of financial donations.

"Without funds we would not be able to do the work we do," Schmucker said.

House, who has helped with Hurricanes Rita and Wilma relief efforts, said during an interview Tuesday afternoon that he was anxious to get to Louisiana to assist the evacuees.

"I wish I could have gone sooner to help the evacuees, but am glad I have the opportunity to help," House said.

The Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking funds that will provide shelter, food, cots, toiletries, first aid and counseling services for evacuees. People can donate to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund.

"It takes a lot of funding to assist victims when there is a disaster of this magnitude," said Larry Peppel, executive director of the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The American Red Cross has nearly 500 shelters in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas ready to receive evacuees.

People can donate to the relief fund by mailing donations to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington D.C. 20013.

People also can drop off or mail financial donations to the Kosciusko County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 320 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw, IN 46580. Make checks out to: National Disaster Relief Fund.
