The Remnant Trust President Kris Bex said Thursday morning that he is finalizing an open house schedule. He plans to coordinate the open houses with other events in Winona Lake.
Potentially, he said, there could be 17 dates per year for open houses. Dates and times will be provided to area news outlets, the county Visitors' Bureau and on the Trust's website.
Items at The Remnant Trust are about liberty and dignity. There are more than 1,000 items in the collection, including such things as the Volgate Bible manuscript, a first print of the Bill of Rights, a first print of the U.S. Constitution and many other historical writings and text. Some of them date back more than 500 years. The Remnant Trust has many items in its collection on loan to other places like universities.
The Remnant Trust is at 1101 Park Ave., Winona Lake.
The Remnant Trust is not a traditional museum. Most, but not all, of the items in the collection can be read and handled by the public.
Bex said when they host an open house, they do get some traffic through. They've held some functions, by invitation only, and those have done well. Since opening in late 2010, Bex said they've received calls about when the next open houses will be.
"We're working with local colleges on internships and other possibilities," said Bex. By making use of those, he said, that will hopefully allow the Trust to be open more.
Currently, tours and viewings are all by appointment only.
"It will be limited in the kind of stuff we can do early on. As we get more staff, we'll have a better set up," said Bex.
Down the road, he said, the Trust plans to have scholars-in-residence.
According to a previous press release from OrthoWorx, through a $170,900 grant from OrthoWorx, a $50,000 grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, and the donated use, maintenance and utilities of the former Billy Sunday Museum by Grace College, The Remnant Trust moved its headquarters from Jeffersonville to Winona Lake.
Funding from OrthoWorx and the Community Foundation was used to retrofit the museum with precise temperature and humidity controls, as well to enhance building security.
Bex said the building is doing good. It's allowing them to maintain controls and is functioning well.[[In-content Ad]]A Community Advisory Committee was created by OrthoWorx to work with The Remnant Trust to consider future public and educational programming.

Bex said the Trust's e-mail is on the website for people to submit their questions. The website also will have a list of the Trust's collection on it.
