Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank was pictured holding a Chilean flag with Winfred Vallette, a representative from Melipilla, Chile, during ceremonies at Grace College. The flag was one of several gifts to the community as part of an attempt by representatives of both cities to establish official sister-city ties.

Jim Fleming, a finishing foreman at the Gatke Corp., has been named winner of a contest sponsored by the Indiana Manufacturers Assn. This year's competition was on the subject: "How I Handle Unsafe Acts and Unsafe Conditions."

Chet Barton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Barton, 425 South Buffalo Street, left Monday for Purdue University to enter his junior year. He is expected to continue his star roll on the Boilermakers' cinder squad this year. He was one of the fastest dashmen in the history of Warsaw High School.

A state law requiring that automobiles must have lighted tail lamps after nightfall is to be rigidly enforced in the future, according to an announcement made today by Mayor J. A. Sloane.
Sept. 23 10 Years Ago Working through the Presiding Bishop's Fund of the Episcopal Church, Leesburg resident Sue Guard has helped bring an Iranian family together in the United States by serving as a diocesan representative and refugee contact person. Guard has been working since June to secure safe passage from Austria for the Avanessians. The couple will remain in Fort Wayne with their son. 25 Years Ago Miss Dawn Classes of Etna Green, a student at Triton High School, has received a Letter of Commendation for her outstanding performance on the 1971 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. 50 Years Ago What is thought to be the largest bass catch on record in Kosciusko County for more than a decade was made Sunday morning by William (Bill) Stinger, Sears Roebuck department head, of 307 South Buffalo Street. He brought in a monster 7-pound, 6-ounce catch from Little Chapman Lake. 75 Years Ago A party of 11 girls gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Smith, East Center Street, on Thursday evening as a surprise to Miss Bernice Smith. It was in honor of Miss Smith's 16th birthday. Sept. 24 10 Years Ago Members of the Warsaw boys' tennis team are hoping to win a sixth straight Northern Lakes Conference title. Team members include Chris McCleary, Ken Crabb, Josh Grill, Wally Horin, Joe Beeson, Darrin Conley, Doug Lemon, Dustin Stamper, Doug Stamper and Don Cramer. 25 Years Ago Lloyd A. Mitterling, 47, Warsaw, reached 25 years of service with Northern Indiana Public Service Co. He and his wife, Doris, have three children, David, 25, Sandie, 23, and Rugina, 22. 50 Years Ago The 1947 softball season in Warsaw officially came to a close Saturday night as the Warsaw AA club scored a 7 to 3 victory over Mentone All-Stars. It was the 33rd victory of the year for the local aggregation, as against seven defeats. 75 Years Ago Ten bushels of jumbo peanuts soon will be harvested by Elmer S. Vandermark, residing eight miles southwest of Warsaw, from a field on his farm. After inspecting the roots of several plants Mr. Vandermark estimates that the yield will be at least that large. Sept. 25 10 Years Ago When John Daffara, manager of human services at Dalton Foundries Inc., wanted to cut down a tree in his yard, he asked to borrow a chainsaw from Steve Gerber, president of Cardinal Center. Gerber volunteered to help, saying he'd had experience in tree cutting. Well, the tree came down, but in the wrong direction. It landed on Daffara's house, causing an unknown amount of damage. 25 Years Ago City gourmets are anxiously awaiting the opening of the addition at Owen's Supermarket on West Market Street that will house a new delicatessen and bake shop and provide facilities to enlarge the frozen foods department. 50 Years Ago Safety lighting began to appear on Warsaw bikes this week as The Times and Union program to light every bike in town gained headway. The safety service is free of charge to any boy or girl who will bring his or her bicycle to The Times building. 75 Years Ago The married men's baseball team of Silver Lake Sunday forenoon defeated the single men's baseball club in that place by a score of 15 to 11. The single men are said to have expected an easy victory and were much surprised over the loss of the game. Sept. 26 10 Years Ago For the first time since 1979, the freshmen won the annual Grace College "Beanie Bowl." The 25-year traditional battle between the freshman and sophomore classes is waged to relieve the freshmen of the responsibility of wearing their beanies. If the freshmen win, they no longer have to wear the beanies. If they lose, the beanies are worn for an additional week. 25 Years Ago Tim O'Dell, a recent graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis, has accepted a position with the Deaton Funeral Home, Bourbon. A 1970 graduate of Arlington High School in Indianapolis, O'Dell and his wife, Lora, are residing at 307 South Main St., Bourbon. 50 Years Ago Eugene Brumfield, who returned to Warsaw Saturday after receiving his discharge from the Navy, spent the weekend with his brother and sister-in-law, who live east of here. He was stationed in Japan. 75 Years Ago September the twenty-sixth promises to usher in the most attractive free fair ever held in Kosciusko County. In the way of free acts, the management has arranged to have six exhibitions daily, three in the afternoon and three in the evening. Sept. 27 10 Years Ago Teamwork of two draft horses owned by Chet Albert of Warsaw claimed many first-place awards this summer. Rex and Rack recently took first place at the Wisconsin State Fair by breaking their own record from the previous year. 25 Years Ago The Warsaw Community High School Marching Tiger Band is participating in a special Band Day Program at Valparaiso University today. It was one of three high school bands invited to participate and present special half-time shows during the university football game. 50 Years Ago Warsaw equestrians placed high in the Cavalcade, Indiana's grand finale to the season's showing of fine horses Saturday and Sunday at Columbia City. The show, formerly known as the "Round Up," was sponsored by the Indiana Saddle Horse Association. 75 Years Ago John Haney. one of the oldest residents of Silver Lake and a pioneer business man of that place, has been a shoemaker in Silver Lake for 50 years.
