    To help get Red Ribbon Week kicked off, Gordy Clemens, who was a small-college All-American basketball player at Franklin College and played professionally in Australia, was at Claypool School Monday to talk about the dangers of drug abuse. Red Ribbon Week is designed to help educate and help students make intelligent decisions about drugs and drug abuse.

    Whitko Talking Wildcats competed at the Southwood-Howe novice and varsity divisional tournament recently, placing second in the overall sweepstakes ranking.

Whitko took 15 speakers to the tournament in the novice division. Those speakers placing were: Debbie Whitaker, fifth in oratorical interpretation; Leta Stickler, sixth in discussion; Lara Piper, third in discussion; and Yolanda Lugo, first in girl's extemp and first in impromptu speaking.

    National recognition has been received by Carol Lois Rinehart, aged 11, of Pierceton. Her poster, entered in the contest conducted by the Auxiliary to the American Legion, was judged the winner at the national convention held recently at Miami, Fla. The award carries with it a cash prize of $100. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Rinehart, of Pierceton.

    Joe R. Scott, who resides near the Ludlow church, southeast of here, has 16 big potatoes weighing 16-3/4 pounds.
