Madison Elementary School students raised nearly $5,000 for playground equipment recently. Top sellers include Amy Perkins, 315 boxes, winning a boom box; Melissa Engle, 260 boxes, winning a 10-speed bicycle; and Leah Reed, 180 boxes, winning a $60 gift certificate to Wal-Mart.

Nearly 200 ghosts, goblins and other creatures attended the first annual Warsaw Girls' Club Halloween party last week, and four of the costume prize winners were Kassie Stamper, most creative; Kim Kleeman, prettiest; Christy Rodocker, scariest; and Kelly Huffer, most original. Other winners were Jill Ramsten, Natalie Hardin, Candy Holbrook and Tracey Long.

Giles Hoffer, coach at Etna Green High School, recalls that back in 1922 and '23 when he was playing basketball with Atwood High School, the Atwood squad had no gymnasium. However, the squad used to walk from Atwood to Warsaw, some six miles along the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, to practice at the Moose hall basketball floor. The 1922-23 teams at Atwood practiced outdoors on a dirt court. Now Atwood has a fine new basketball floor and gymnasium to start the season with.

A mock trial with V.M. Hatfield, judge; attorneys John Sloane and Morrison Rockhill, prosecuting, and J.E. Headley and Merl Gochenour, defending, resulted in a verdict of guilty this noon at the Kiwanis luncheon. Keith Hankins was tried on a charge of being a good Kiwanis member.
