    Jody Thompson, a sixth-grade student who is the daughter of Marshall and Ruth Thompson, Warsaw, competed in her second major audition in less than a week. Last week, she auditioned for a commercial for St. Jude's Hospital in Chicago. Friday, she was back in Chicago for an audition in a Walt Disney Movie. The youngster has already appeared in local plays at the Wagon Wheel Theatre, including the "Christmas Carol."

    Former State Police Sgt. John Hammersley, Warsaw, was honored by more than 100 of his fellow officers at a retirement dinner held at the Holiday Inn here. Hammersley recently retired after more than 20 years with the Indiana State Police.

    The custom of shaving can be blamed on love and male vanity. According to researchers, primitive men hacked off their beards with a hatchet and then cut or pulled out the stubble with a hunting knife. The motivation for this self-inflicted torture is believed to have been provided when a Stone Age fashion plate glanced into the still waters of a pool. Reflected was the awful image of red-rimmed eyes and the tip of a nose-protruding through a background of grizzly whiskers. This brave soul laid his chin on a tree stump and went to work on the beard. Later, scarred but whiskerless, he wooed and won his heartthrob, and got a permanent housekeeper for his cave. Today, the equipment is better but the principles are the same.

    Kosciusko County jail, empty since Feb. 25, excepting on one or two occasions when prisoners were confined for a few hours, is probably the record for the local jail.
