March 6 1989

    The first match of the Kosciusko County Spelling Bee took place last night at the First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, and Debra Dome, a sixth grader at South Whitley Middle School, emerged after the 39th round as the 1989 Fifth and Sixth Grade Spelling Champion.

Runner-up was James Burdge, a sixth grader at Akron School, who missed the championship title in the 37th round by misspelling "cabaret."

    Jerry C. Hudson Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry C. Hudson Sr., Mentone, has been nominated to the United State Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., by Sen. Birch Bayh.

Jerry, a senior at Mentone High School, has been active in all sports, band, chorus, speech and dramatics, and is president of the Future Teachers Association and Lettermen's Club.

    Playtime Products Inc., Warsaw, makers of doll carriages, will have a record showing of new toys at the 46th annual American Toy Fair held in New York City March 7 to 18.

This year Playtime will have the four following local people represent them at the toy fair: Jack Chrisman, Frank Lewis, Robert Smallwood and Wanda Ayars.
