    Two area student-athletes recently earned the rights to a trip to Indianapolis to compete against other sharpshooters from around the state in the finals of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest.

Brandon Lozano, an eighth grade student from Syracuse, and Heather Perzanowski, a freshman at Wawasee High School, won competitions at the council, district and regional levels to earn the state bids.

    Career police officer John E. Hammersley, 46, of 621 Pam St., Warsaw, has resigned from the Indiana State Police and will file today for the office of Kosciusko County Sheriff on the Democrat ticket for the May 17 primary election.

His filing will create a three-way race on the Democrat ballot for the sheriff's post. Ronald Dirck, Warsaw, and Patrick Gallagher, North Webster, previously declared their intentions for the office.

    Marilyn Beer, of Milford High School, captured the $350 first prize in the county essay contest on "Why Democracy Works," sponsored by the Warsaw Elks' Lodge, it was announced today by V.A. McCleary, the exalted ruler.

The second prize of $20 went to Dorothy Joan Turnbull, of Winona Lake, a student in the Warsaw High School, and Joan Slater, of Rt. 2, South Whitley, a student in the Sidney High School, won the third-place award of $15.

    The attention of many Warsawans was early this morning attracted to a flock of nine wild geese flying over the city and headed for the south. Apparently the birds had come north during the recent mild weather and finally reached the conclusion that their trip was too early.
