December 11 1989

    The holiday spirit is alive at the Winona Lake Post Office. Retha Hicks, a carrier, took the time to create a painted sleigh, which is modeled after the 1989 Christmas postage stamp. The sleigh is on display now in the post office.

    The VFW "Voice of Democracy" speech contest was held at Wawasee High School last week.

The winner was Larry Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Allen, Syracuse, a junior at Wawasee High School. He was awarded a medal, a $25 bond and the privilege of having his speech judged in the district contest later in the month. The runner-up was Shannon Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hall, North Webster, a senior at Wawasee High School. She was awarded a second place medal.

    Kenneth O. Taylor, a fireman apprentice in the United State Navy, was a "host" to the King of England when that ruler recently visited the heavy cruiser, USS Columbus, of which Taylor, of Warsaw, is a crew member. Taylor is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville M. Taylor, 428 S. Indiana St., Warsaw.

    At a meeting of the foot ball squad held on Friday noon at the high school, Charles Ward was elected captain of the 1925 foot ball team. Senior letters were awarded to the following: Deeter, Sutherlin, Akers, Nye, Helvey, Loop, Pittenger, Helwig, Sands, Sunday, Ring, Carver, Farris, Ward and Belt.
