    There's no magic formula to living to be 100, but Bernice Gridley of Winona Lake claims a few things helped along the way. "You obey the Bible, have good, healthy parents and a good nutrition. I've always had a good garden where I live. That's one reason I've lived so long," she said.

    Don Goshert, a representative of Ramsey News Company, 1128 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, was presented a check for $150 by W.P. Ramsey, owner of the firm, representing the third place award in a national contest of Bantam Books for promoting books best in schools. Ramsey News pioneered the introduction of paperbacks in high schools 11 years ago.

    Who will be the brave ones to take the Polar Bear Club dip this Jan. 1? Last one on record, we believe, was a few years ago with Bruce Howard, Bruce Howe and one or two other Winona Lake lads.

    The instructor of certain grade pupils in the Warsaw schools requested youngsters write essays on "A Dog." Here is one actually read by a small boy. "The dog stood on the burning deck, eating peanuts by the peck: The flames came up and burned his neck, hot dog." Pupils in their own estimation game him a percentage mark around 100, but the instructor is reported to have rated him somewhere around zero.
