    Carole Koos, a teacher at Sacred Heart in Warsaw, has received the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award for excellence in teaching.

Koos received a $500 grant for the school. She was one of 1,000 teachers from around the country to receive the award.

August 29 1981

    Warsaw Community High School senior varsity basketball player Brent Messmore wanted to show his dairy cow, Ethel, in the recent county fair, but couldn't because she was recuperating from an operation for a twisted stomach. Ethel, you may recall, was the star of a pre-state tourney pep rally when Brent's dad Gene brought the animal to the gym. The Messmores raise dairy cattle, east of Warsaw.

August 29 1956

    Two Winona Lake ladies have combined forces to give their neighborhood an outstanding flower garden. Mrs. Myron Ringo and Mrs. Walter Ross are using a vacant lot between their homes to grow blooms of all kinds and descriptions. In addition, Mrs. Ringo has a second large flower garden directly behind her home.


75 Years Ago

August 29 1931

    Expenditures of from $15,000 to $20,000 will be made on remodeling and improvements in the Centennial Theatre here, announced J.W. Seabold, manager.

New upholstered seats costing $25 each, thick carpets, a glass sounding board to improve the acoustics of the theater, a ticket box office in the center of the entrance, a new marque over the sidewalk to protect waiting ticket purchases from rain, new electric signs, alteration of the lobby and furnishings of settees and lamps for waiting patrons to meet friends, new scenery, new drapes for the stage and many other expensive additions will be installed.
