One-hundred-five years ago on this date, the first patented telephone was eight years old, the zipper did not exist, FM radio was 49 years away from being invented, TV broadcasts in the United States were 55 years in the future, the gasoline automobile would be invented in another year ... and Mabel Kyle was born three miles west of Pierceton.

The Nappanee Beard Contest, with 12 categories of competition, drew a big crowd Saturday evening. Jack Roe, Ligonier, placed first; Wally Huffer, Syracuse, placed second, and Max Newcomer, Nappanee, placed third in the Lincoln beard competition.

On her 80th birthday, Aug. 5, Mae Osborn, of East Market Street, received 76 greeting cards and many gifts and enjoyed the occasion very much.

Glenn Smith celebrated the occasion of his birthday last evening by entertaining at a stag dinner party at his home at Detroit and South streets. A delicious four-course repast was followed with the usual after-dinner stag sports. Among the guests were Burton Foulke, Russell Walton, Perry Easterday, George East, Dr. W.A. Gassaway, Raymond Williams, Fred Bartol, Lawrence Polk and Paul Snyder.
