William “Bill” Metcalf, North Webster, was recognized with a lifetime achievement trophy Sept. 15 for 73 years of dedicated service with the North Webster Fire Department, serving for more than 30 years as chief. He became a member of the department before it had its first fire truck. Metcalf's badge and fire service number, 726, were retired in his honor. He was the 1997 Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year. Gary Robinson, deputy state fire marshal, awarded him the Governor's Meritorious Service Award. In his speech, Metcalf thanked his wife of 68 years, Lunetta.

Darrell Boling has retired after 33 years of service to Warsaw Community Schools. After coming to WCS in 1959 as an industrial arts and mathematics teacher at the Junior High, he taught math at the newly-constructed Warsaw Community High School on Smith Street from 1962 to 1969. He became the first full-time athletic director in 1969, piloting a comprehensive program in his 10 years. He became the first dean of students in 1976, becoming assistant principal two years later. In 1980, Boling became the first superintendent for personnel and stayed with that position five years. In 1985, he returned to the high school as assistant principal, remaining in that post until the close of the last school year.
Emily Johnson, 18 months, Warsaw, had a ball with soap bubbles during “Art in the Park” at Center Lake Saturday, Sept. 8. She was there with her mother, Debbie.

Attractive Angela Blanchard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Blanchard, Route 2, Warsaw, is The Times-Union September Calendar Girl. She reminds motorists that school is open, and they should use caution. Angela is a WHS varsity cheerleader.
Horn's Sunnymede Restaurant held its annual end of the season party this week at the Gordon Sand home, one mile north of Leesburg. Sand is manager of the restaurant, and was surprised when employees presented him with a scroll depicting outstanding events of the past summer. The Western-style cookout was highlighted with a skit featuring the characters from TV's “Gunsmoke.” Keith Horn portrayed Marshal Dillon and his wife, Virginia, was Kitty. The evening ended with singing around a campfire.

The Warsaw tennis team dropped a match to Niles, Mich. here July 28 by a score of 5 to 4. Bob Gast, playing the No. 2 spot, tacked up the only win for Warsaw in the singles; George Bowser, Clarence Hartman, Schubert Johnson, Kenneth Boice and Howard Levin were handed defeats. Warsaw swept the doubles play, though.[[In-content Ad]]
