Sept. 9 officially marked the beginning of the United Way fund-raising campaign for Kosciusko County. Board president Clare Baumgardt and campaign chairman David Findlay, Lake City Bank chief financial officer, posed by the United Way Mardi Gras Campaign mascot at the Pacesetter kickoff.
A multicultural exhibit remains at the Lakeland Art Gallery, 116 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw, until Oct. 15. Mary Anderson, Warsaw, is exhibiting clothing and jewelry she has designed, along with other items that depict her African heritage. Donald Moffett, Warsaw, has been an avid stamp collector for many years and enjoys history.

Winning scholarships from the B. Franklin and Eleanor M. Ringle Educational Trust are Curtis Boggs, Michelle Dick, Dawn Dilling, Jerrod Feldman, Kelli Hoke, Elizabeth Irvine, Tami Miller, Mindy Pletcher, Nicole Ryman and Rebecca VanSchepen. Renewal recipients are David Darr, Michelle Gunsolley, Andrea Halpin, Tamra Hollar, Jennifer Kline, Andrea Kloser and Jeffrey Mathisen. Requirements are active church participation and excellent scholastic records.
Lake City Bank held ribbon-cutting ceremonies Sept. 7 for its new facility in Wabash, the third location in Wabash County.
A 4,000-square-foot addition is slated for the north side of the Warsaw post office building this fall, according to Postmaster Bob Douglas. This adds 500 new post office boxes.

Ace Hardware, 107 E. Center St., was virtually destroyed by fire shortly before 9 p.m. Sept. 3. The blaze was believed to have been caused by a faulty switch box over the fish aquarium in the center of the building. Dense smoke poured into adjoining buildings sending damage well in excess of $100,000. City firemen were able to contain the blaze to an area of several hundred feet in the bend of the L-shaped hardware building; the heat was devastating, melting objects at both the far ends on the Center and Buffalo streets entrances. Ned Maze, owner of Ace, said that much of the merchandise was new Christmas stock.

Everett “Silent” Rattan, Warsaw, will meet “Whisker” Adams of Utah in a wrestling match Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the new outdoor sports arena in Fort Wayne.
Officers Harve Mathews and Link Hay put a big piece of ice in the public fountain, corner of Buffalo and Center streets, at midnight. Mathews forgot about the two inches of water on the coils, ice fell in with a splash and the splash fell on him.
Milton Thacker, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Thacker, Akron, who won an “all expenses paid” trip with subscriptions to an Indianapolis paper, left Sunday on a special train from Indianapolis for the New York World’s Fair.
Herschel Leiter of the DePuy Splint Factory is entertaining salesmen from all over the United States this week. The group dines tonight at the Tavern Hotel, Wawasee.
