Austin Long, 10, North Webster, is the top-ranked BMX racer in the nation in the novice division after winning the National Championships in Louisville, Ky. over Labor Day weekend. Long competed in a number of elimination races (called motos) and won the championship race over eight other riders. Austin began racing BMX bikes at age five and calls Warsaw’s Hire Park his home track. His father, Eldon, used to race at Hire Park and is now a mechanic at Boggs Automotive, Warsaw. Eldon had to dismantle his son’s 6-foot tall trophy so he could drive it home.

Faerholm, 304 Chestnut St., Winona Lake, was built on the ruins of the first home destroyed by fire in 1914, according to Chautauqua ’89 information. The home was inhabited until 1926 by evangelist Milford H. Lyons and his family. Faerholm is a magnificent Prairie-Four Square structure, home to Mr. and Mrs. Harold DeVries. The exterior is done in stucco and is widely overhung by generous eaves and a low hipped roof. The interior is room after room of glorious dark, polished woodwork and hardwood floors, an impressive showcase for the DeVries’ collection of antiques and heirlooms. A wide, open staircase, pocket doors, beveled glass French doors and a large brick fireplace from the first house, add further beauty.

Lieutenant-Commander Vern B. Boggs is back in Warsaw for a visit with family following completion of 30 years service with the U.S. Navy, retiring June 30. He has been relieved of his duties aboard U.S.S. Relief, a hospital ship. The most dangerous operation could be performed by reason of a gyro-balanced operating room, which keeps it stationary over the roughest seas. Sports editor Mush Warner took a trip on the Relief from San Pedro, Cal., to the Mare Island Navy Yard. Vern was paymaster at League Island Navy Yard, Philadelphia, when Mush was discharged.
Warsaw children were excited when Barnett’s Circus pulled into town for afternoon and evening performances. Main attraction for the kids is Baron Novak, 19, smallest adult person in the world, who sings and dances.[[In-content Ad]]
