Midshipman Joshua Buck, Warsaw, has received a Silver Star at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. for academic achievement during the spring term. It’s the equivalent to being named to the dean’s list.
Retired physician Dr. David Brandes proposed to the Wawasee School Board that the school participate in the Syracuse-Wawasee Trail. The first section of the trail would go through Wawasee High School property. Board member Marion Acton requested that there be a plan tying the Milford Elementary School to the trail. Jeff Noffsinger, new Syracuse town manager, will plan the trail.

This is the second year that United Way will be making a film of local agencies at work in Kosciusko County. In 1988, the film crew at Zimmer showed industries and service organizations throughout the county. This year, the production facility at DePuy was used to produce a 10-minute film titled “You Are My Hero” featuring Chris Schenkel as narrator of actual cases of assistance in the community.
The Second Annual North Webster Senior Citizens Day was held at the town’s new park near the Dixie paddleboat. It featured a picnic lunch, rides on the Dixie and entertainment by Ray’s Old Gold. Nearly 500 people enjoyed the event, including 3-year-old Stefanie Ebeltoft.

Dalton Foundries, Big Boy Products and Endicott Church Furniture Co. combined for a company picnic Saturday afternoon at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds. A miniature ferris wheel, merry-go-round and pony rides supplied entertainment for the youngsters. Wilbur Neer appeared as “Koko the clown.” Butler Johnson received a portable TV set as winner of the “get acquainted” contest.
Stanley Pequignot, 21, Pierceton, is co-chairman of the “Young Citizens for Vance Hartke Club” at their headquarters in Indianapolis.
“Commodore” Joseph P. Prout, 1510 Country Club Dr., proved his mastery at sailing by winning the Winona Lake Regatta. He passed along a lot of credit to his crew mate, Pepper McKown, 14, who returned from a sailing course at Culver Military Academy.

Eight busses carrying 550 Chicago boys arrived at Chicago Boys Club for a two-weeks outing at their summer camp, south end of Winona Lake. This is the club’s 30th year; 3,000 youngsters will visit the camp this summer. There are eight bands under the direction of Howard Tooley.
Mary Ellen Burwell, Warsaw, owns an ancient Ford with pretty tie-back curtains on the windows, a phonograph pinch-hitting for a radio, the needle slipping every time you go around a curve too fast, lanterns for lights, and you crank and crank before “Fanny” even shows signs of chugging.
Chevrolet salesmen at Spink-Wawasee hotel were amazed when acrobat Lew Nelson pulled three Chevrolet cars with his teeth clamped into an inner tube.
