Troy Akers, 42, is excited about being named Warsaw Community High School’s new head football coach after the resignation of Phil Jensen. Akers was the head football coach from 1990 to 1992 at Wawasee. He came to Warsaw in 1996 with Jensen and has spent the last eight years as the defensive coordinator. Under their leadership Warsaw posted a 40-14 record the past five years, won back-to-back NLC championships and took the Tigers to the sectional championship game for the first time in school history.

Kurt Carlson was appointed by the board of the Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services to be the new chief executive officer replacing Daniel D. Steiner, who resigned in February of this year. The new appointment is effective June 15.
Pere Edwidge Carre, a Catholic priest from Haiti, is visiting at Sacred Heart this week to thank the school for supporting his country. Through Adopt-A-Parish, Sacred Heart has been offering financial assistance to the Haitians for over a year.
Warsaw baseball team’s seniors celebrate as they pick up the trophy for winning their first-ever Northern Lakes Conference championship. The team beat the Goshen Redskins 3-2. The Tigers got things started right away in the top of the first when Sherlock Harrison led off with a walk. Doug Light slides into third in the 7th inning.

“The Barretts of Wimpole Street,” will be presented by the Warsaw High School junior class April 14 and 15 in the auditorium. Mildred Petrie is directing the play, which enjoyed a long run on Broadway in 1931. Cast includes Frank Todd, Lamar Bryan, Beth Swain, Dave Wright, Kenneth Fish, Lorraine DePoy, Connie Latta, Toni Dock, Gary Haymond, Tom Kinch, Dave Barnett, Jim Nyenhuis, Doug Hollar, Barbara Kerber, Mareda Summers, Dave Martin, William Loop, Randy Sowers, Mary Kingston and Cheryl Lynn Chance. Thames Mauzy has loaned an Italian furniture suite. Theodore Good contributed an antique picture above the fireplace. John Helfrich added red satin drapes. Glendora Davis is helping with hair and makeup and Forrest Croopon lighting and stage arrangements.

Dudgeon of Burket High School announced that 18 seniors would graduate April 20: Betty Brown, Jennie Mae Goshert, Barbara Kinsey, Helen Murphy, Gladys Silveus, La Donno Summe, Leatha Warren, Merrill Bear, Albert Brown, Hal Doran, Charles Holloway, Charles Kinney, Bennie McCloughan, Harold Moore, Sherman Summers, Jr., Devon Swick, James Zinn and Byron Shoemaker. Baccalaureate services will be April 16 at the Methodist Church in Burket with the Rev. Alba Sholty, Fort Wayne. Dr. Robert Phillips, Purdue University, will speak to the Class of 1939 April 20 at the school gymnasium. Principal Glen Longenecker of Beaver Dam High School announced that seven seniors would graduate April 21: Marjorie Arnsbarger, Evelyn Ferree, Mable Mitschelen, William Hudson, Warren Cumberland, Thomas Meredith and Dail Barber. Prof. Raymond Schutz of Manchester College will speak.
