Though they don’t claim to be big race fans, Bill and Diane Newcum, Tippecanoe Lake, have certainly made their own impact on the Indy Racing League and the Indianapolis 500. What the Newcums do claim to be are “problem solvers,” and solve a problem they did. With tires in the IRL being leased to teams, officials needed a method to verify information concerning proper race tires on designated cars at the beginning of each race. This is where the Newcums, owners/operators of Advanced Software Technology stepped in.

A recent graduate of Warsaw Community High School was named the winner of the Miss Kosciusko Scholarship Pageant here Saturday night at the Tippecanoe Valley High School commons area. Seventeen-year-old Keeley Denese Watts was crowned “Miss Kosciusko” and received a $1,500 scholarship and a $300 clothing allowance. She will represent the county in the Miss Indiana pageant next year. First runner-up was Dawn Lemons, 17, a classmate of Miss Watts and also a 1987 graduate of WCHS.

Not every youngster is as fortunate as Dee Ann Spicher in having grandmothers of three generations to applaud her achievements. Her great-great-grandmother is Mrs. William Montague, her great-grandmother is Mrs. Melva Blue Sr., and her grandmother is Mrs. Paul McGinnis. All live in Warsaw and all were on hand to see her graduate from Madison kindergarten a few weeks ago. Dee Ann’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Spicher, Lake Shore Drive.

Robert Shinn has returned to Purdue University where he has enrolled for the summer course. He visited here one week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shinn, between terms.
Miss Virginia Mellencamp arrived in Warsaw to spend her summer vacation. Miss Mellencamp is a student at DePauw University, Greencastle.
