Curt Brown, 48, was honored by Ivy Tech State College as the outstanding alumnus of the year at commencement ceremonies May 10 in South Bend’s Century Center. Brown went back to school at 35 while working full-time as a maintenance machinist at R.R. Donnelley and raising a family.

John Hanna, supervisor of network operations for Sprint, celebrated 30 years with the company. He joined Sprint in 1974 as an installer repairman.

Edith Palmer and Dorothy McKibben, residents of Lakeland Loving Care Center, Milford, participated in a balloon launch Monday afternoon to kick off National Nursing Home Week.
A brief ceremony preceded the lighting of the Victorian-style lights around Courthouse Square. Participating were Robert Boley, chairman of the pedestrian lighting committee; Sharon Chase, executive director of the Warsaw Community Development Corporation; Jeff Plank, Warsaw mayor; and Jim Manhart, WCDC president.
Robert E. Gephart is honored for his 20 years of service at Lake City Bank. Executive vice-president is Richard G. Adams.

The county’s best seventh- and eighth-grade spellers compete April 11: Kathleen Hauser, South Whitley; Connie Manns, Beaver Dam; Michael Kubacki, Pierceton; Julie Zimmerman, Silver Lake; Ann Fisher, Sidney; Sherrie Graff, Milford; Dawn Inai, Warsaw Junior High; James A. Dombek, Warsaw Brethren; Mary Jo Conway, North Webster; Margie Merkle, Claypool; Kathy Lee Murray, Syracuse; Tom Goodrich, Larwill; Christina Archer, Leesburg; Becky Hunter, Talma. The winner faces James Sloan, fifth-sixth winner, April 25. Edgar Speer, Syracuse Grade School principal, will pronounce.
Musicians for the Lakeland Civic Music Association 1964-65 membership campaign kick-off dinner in the high school commons are Hal Kratzch, trumpet; Paul Russell, piano; Robert Brumfield, bass fiddle; John White, drums.

Major Carl F. Beyer and wife, returning by auto from California trip, stopped off at Mercedes, Texas, to visit old campgrounds where Beyer’s Co. H, Third Indiana Infantry Company of Warsaw boys patroled the Mexican border in 1916. He will visit Hattiesburg, Miss., campsite, where he and his same boys trained for the world war.
Members of Co. L are drilling two nights this week and three next in preparation for federal inspection.
Sugar camps in the county gare oing full blast on record flow of sap.
Will Taylor, former county surveyor, has informed officials that the county might be securing another CCC camp. One was located at Syracuse a year ago but it did not prove popular with residents. Present plans call for the establishment of a CCC camp either at Rochester or Akron. The camps serve a radius of 25 miles.
