Olive L. Pittman Johnson celebrated her 100th birthday April 21. As a young woman, she was a teacher in Michigan, but spent most of her life in Etna Green, becoming a kindergarten teacher and postmaster. Her children are Glenn “Skip,” Dennis, Mary (Lowell) Welty, all of Etna Green; Max E., Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Jo Anne (Philip) Parker, Warsaw; Sue Eve died in 1936. She has 27 grandchildren. Johnson enjoys spending time with her sister, Edna Nellans, 94, of Warsaw.

The Warsaw Wesleyan youth group Power Supply will hold an Easter egg hunt and bake sale April 14, at the church: Ethel Groat, Beth James, Sarah Wood, Jose Seballos, Kristi Davis, Tammy Turner and Travis Shepherd.
Work on Center Street is underway, with the process of replacing old curbs with new being first on the agenda. Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank said the street won’t be significantly wider but a different style curb is being put in that makes the street a foot wider than it was before. The street will only be closed during paving, with work expected to be done by early summer.
The Jail Museum and Lakeland Quilt Club will sponsor a quilt exhibit May 18-20 on all three floors of the museum. Pauline Jordan and Mary K. Coplen display historic quilts: 1850, Juila Garvin Yeakel, Prairie Township; 1860, Alice Bowman Plummer, Etna Township.

Fire completely destroyed the Barbee Lake Grocery at Little Barbee Lake March 23. The one-story frame building housed the grocery and a small bait shop on the south side and was operated by Maurice and Mary Fidler of Barbee Lake. The blaze was first discovered about 9 p.m. by Mrs. R.A. Kroll, who lives across from the store and saw smoke coming from the roof. She summoned the North Webster Fire Department. Chief Verland Bockman said they arrived to an intensive amount of smoke and flames and were aided by the Pierceton Fire Department. The store has been a landmark since the early 1920s when the building was moved to its present location by John H. Willard, who operated a general store. In 1924, the Barbee Hotel, directly across the street, was destroyed by an early morning blaze.

Mrs. Lloyd Moser, of Leesburg, executive secretary of the county Red Cross, said a radio broadcast will be given March 16 over the Red Network of the National Broadcasting Company describing the Red Cross war relief operations.
“Gone With the Wind,” that much-heralded, much-talked-about picture of 1940, will appear in Warsaw at the Centennial Theatre April 6,7,8 and 9. Booking was completed after considerable diligent work on the part of Manager Nick Mallers in his untiring efforts to secure the “tops” in movie entertainment for Warsaw and Kosciusko County theatre-goers.
Glen Longenecker, principal at Beaver Dam High School, announced the senior class play, “Page Asa Bunker,” will be held March 22 at the auditorium.
