As part of the Warsaw Community Development Corporation’s improvement program, Wildman Construction workers removed a metal panel above Reader’s World and discovered an intricate limestone facade that had been covered for more than 40 years – Corinthian capitals and an ornate entablature with three arches. Originally, plans were to install a new awning but the metal plate was too delicate to support it. The building was built in 1883 and functioned as a saloon during the time the courthouse was being built, 1881-1884. “As the story goes, the construction crew built the facade with left-over materials to settle up a bar tab,” according to Reader’s World manager Nan Hill.

Rich Severson, president of Kent Feeds in Muscatine, Iowa, presents an award to Tom Smithson of Tom’s Feed Service at a banquet in Fort Wayne. The firm was recognized for its outstanding sales and service during 1988. Kent Feeds is one of the largest manufacturers of livestock and poultry feeds in the United States, founded in 1927.
Newly elected officers for the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce are Clint Pletcher, president; Rex Mast, vice president; Dr. Susan Mort, secretary; Mary Baker, treasurer. The new officers will help plan the “Citizen of the Year Banquet” April 19.
Grades 1, 2 and 3 of Lincoln Elementary School presented the musical program, “Stone Soup.” Bob Dillon directed the program.

Silver Lake Junior High School basketball players were winners of trophies for the 1963-64 season: Phil Jagger, captain and sportsmanship; Mike Arnold, free throw; Jim McKenzie, most improved; Danny Stanley, most valuable and leading scorer. The awards were made at a banquet at the Horn’s Sunnymede Restaurant in Warsaw.
Richard Wroughton, 35, is the newly appointed Times-Union correspondent for the Silver Lake area. Wroughton, a native of Illinois, has been sixth-grade teacher and junior high athletic coach at Silver Lake School for five years.
Robert Auer, Milford, will be the pro this year at the South Shore Golf Course, four miles south of Syracuse on Ind. 13. James Connolly will continue to manage the club.

Catherine Jeffries is industriously crocheting wash rags for the Billy Heitz Hotel, Winona Lake. She tells of knitting 10 pairs of woolen socks and seven sweaters for the soldier boys during the world war. Etta Breckenridge is also dextrous with her needles and tats about 10 yards of dainty lace every week. Heitz serves more than a hundred meals during the summer months. Jane Anderson once served 956 meals in one day during the summer at the Homestead Hotel. She was 100 years old and she often talks of coming back.
J.E. Smith, whose Atwood Hardware store burned down, has purchased and is remodeling the old Marsh cement block building. Son Walter B. Smith will carry on the business while he retires after 46 years. J.E. was born west of Warsaw in 1865.
