Sesquicentennial Moment by Sally Coplen Hogan: When Warsaw was founded it was an island for there was a tamarack swamp all over the the lowlands just east of what is now Detroit St. Center, Pike and Winona Lakes were joined by swamp land. The lands throughout the county had to be ditched to make the area inhabitable. John Chapman, one of the earliest settlers, named Kosciusko County after Thaddeus Kosciuszko, the Revolutionary War hero. He prepared the bill that fixed the county’s boundaries and secured its passage.

William J. Chinworth retired after spending 40 years in continuous business in Warsaw. On Jan. 22 he and his wife leave Warsaw for Tucson, Ariz., to spend several days with their son, William, and family before leaving Los Angeles by ship Feb. 3 to New Zealand. They will tour Manila, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, India and the Holy Land, where son, Ford, will join them on June 28. They plan trips to Turkey, Greece, central Europe, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Holland. Their return trip is from France Sept. 10. The Chinworths will be guests of fellow Rotarians (35 years) and of exchange students who have lived at their home. Mr. Chinworth first came to Warsaw from Macy in 1918 to join his uncles in a hardware and farm implement business on West Main Street where Schrader Furniture is now. In 1927 he began a household appliance business with G. Harry Oram.

Grover Sims, Winona Lake, originator of the Sims Visual Music Company headquartered in Quincy, is making a nationwide plea for the revival of interest in stanzas five and six of “America.” Mr. Sims explains that Dr. Samuel Francis Smith wrote these powerful words in 1832 at the request of Lowell Mason, pioneer school music teacher in America who taught the first music in the public schools in Boston.
Oswego’s George Wable brought into the Times an old Republican election ballot of 1888 with Benjamin Harrison leading the ticket for president and local names of Manwaring, H. S. Biggs, John N. Runyon, George McCarter, Beck, which recall pioneer family names, all candidates for local county offices.
