Kosciusko County Community Foundation recognized 47 persons for having hearts of gold at the 2005 Heart of Gold Awards reception March 22. Dr. Ron Manahan, board member, highlighted 10 nominations: Carrie Yocum, Merae Meek, June Stealy, Sally Mahnken, Dr. Jennifer Brumfield, Max Clingaman, Bill and Linda Cochran, Denny Duncan, Stu Watkins and Al Sumpter.
North Webster residents David Oakes and Lynn Stevens were honored as co-persons of the year during the annual North Webster Chamber of Commerce banquet. Chris Bruno, president, said the award is given to those who contribute to their community. Connie Beery was recognized for her years of service to the chamber. Neva’s Restaurant catered the banquet held at the community center.

Work resumed on the Bob Evans restaurant in Warsaw, and plans are to open for business in July. The facility hit a snag in November when construction officials noticed the building settling, or bowing, in the center due drilling errors. Work was stalled until this week. The Ohio firm overseeing the repair needs to go down another five feet to get out of the peat, and down 40 feet to secure a second foundation.
Caleb Schaffer, 7, and Joe Rath, 8, both of Winona Lake, enjoyed Monday’s springlike weather by exploring the edge of the Winona canal.
Alan Compton was chosen “Associate of the Store” for February at the Warsaw Big Wheel. Manager Archie Armino recognized Compton for his above standard level job performance.

Optimist Club oratorical winners: Jim Harvuot, Warsaw eighth-grader, first; Ernie Boyd, Warsaw Junior High, second; and Ronald Slone, Mentone, third. Dean Arnold Kriegbaum, Grace College, is chairman of the contest committee.
Gaylord Donnelley told the Warsaw Donnelley managers how his grandfather, Richard R. Donnelley, had been apprenticed to a saddlemaker at the age of 13 and found this job lacking in challenge. So, he ran away and began working in a printing office. He came to Chicago in 1864 to become a partner in the firm of Church, Goodman and Donnelley, which, 18 years later, became R.R. Donnelley & Sons. Following his grandfather’s death in 1899, his father, Thomas Elliott Donnelley, became president and treasurer for 50 years and made the organization prosper.

Plans are being discussed for the 1940 fair to be held in Warsaw’s business district. Mayor John G. Hansman expressed opposition to the use of city streets in favor of city park property, but a survey of business houses and organizations show that continuation of the street fair is favored by a large majority.
The spring thaw causes damage to the 913.8 miles of gravel roads in the county, said S.R. Laughlin, county highway supervisor. When they become soft and spongy, traffic soon leaves them rough and ribbed. E.E. Ragan, state highway superintendent, said no weight restrictions will be placed on vehicles using roads during the spring season as in previous years.[[In-content Ad]]
